Donkey Kong Country

Donkey Kong

Donkey Kong Country is the Super Nintendo classic side scrolling platformer that set off the DK franchise. The original Donkey Kong Arcade games were classic platformers in of themselves, but the DK franchise didn’t really hit it off until DK got his own adventure in Donkey Kong Country, created by Rare. This title introduced DK’s buddy Diddy, cranky old grandfather, his girlfriend Candy, his (brother?) Funky Kong, and perhaps most notably, Donkey Kong’s arch-nemesis, King K. Rool, along with his Kremling Krew.

DKC jump-started the popularity of the DK franchise and enabled it to continue on for years and years, becoming Nintendo’s fourth best-selling franchise (until the Wii games beat it out and pushed DK into fifth place). Donkey Kong Country features beautiful graphics and epic music by David Wise. The story focuses on DK’s journey to save his Banana Hoard from the clutches of the evil King K. Rool.

Notes From the Editor

Donkey Kong Country is one of my favorite video games of all time, and is a significant highlight of my childhood memories. I remember constantly trying, and failing, to get through the original DKC game on Super Nintendo, primarily playing it on my grandmother’s SNES. It also introduced my favorite Nintendo villain of all time, and my #1 most wanted character for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS, King K. Rool.
